Borrowing Freedom

The sun
On hiatus
We stood
In line

Waiting

It was the
First time
I learned

Horses have eyelashes

“They must cry,” I thought

I turned to
My friend

“I don’t want to do this,” I said.

“But you’ll love it,” she said.

I stayed in line – Waiting.

His name was Neptune

The trainer picked me up
Put my feet in the stirrups

I didn’t have the language
To ask whether he was a God
Or a place I would travel upon

The path he took me on
Was beautiful, and
I cried the whole way

Still I don’t know if
He was a God, or
A place I traveled upon
That cried before sleeping
