A Hearts Trembling Sound

He asks me to sing
I decline
Without describing how
Cringe-worthy my joy
Translates
With headphones

He pushes and describes
The potential balance
In editing

He wins
I record a song
He edits
It sounds…

Easier on the ears?

It feels miraculous
To me
The taking of my pitch
To zoom in on highs and lows
To assign balance

It sounds better
Disguises inexperience
Sounds more polished
Yet still, like me?

But it’s not true

It hides vulnerability
That attempts to sing
‘Like’ another

It hides how the voice
Shakes
Not because it lacks
Confidence, but because

The nature of me
Shakes
Like a leaf in the
Wind

Swaying
Unpolished
Unapologetic
Green
Natural

Singing
Without edit
To admit
Her wings
Are plastic

Then continues
Flying
Regardless

Synthetic
Attraction to Perfection
Rejecting Freedom
That doesn’t tremble
At the sound of the
Heart’s fragile essence

Plastic [Cover]
